Some recipes don’t just fill your stomach — they fill your soul.
Paniyaram is one such gem from the heart of South India. A traditional dish born out of culinary wisdom and everyday innovation, paniyaram is proof that even the simplest of ingredients can create magic. Today, we’re bringing that tradition to your kitchen with a flavorful twist — using The Manduva Project’s Coconut Podi, Peanut Podi. & Tiffin Sprinkle Range.
Originally from the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, Paniyaram is made using fermented rice and urad dal batter, poured into a special paniyaram pan with small, round molds. The word kuzhi means "pit" or "hole" in Tamil — a nod to the shape of the pan.
Historically, it’s been a zero-waste dish — a brilliant way to use leftover dosa or idli batter. But over time, this humble snack has turned into a much-loved breakfast and street food staple, not just in South India, but across the country and even globally. Whether sweet (with jaggery or coconut) or savoury (spiced with chillies, onions, ginger), Paniyaram has many avatars — and endless potential for innovation.
The Manduva Upgrade: Paniyaram Meets Podi
In this version, we’ve added a bold, flavourful spin by incorporating Manduva’s Tiffin Sprinkle Podi directly into the batter. Here’s how:
Ingredients:
-Dosa or idli batter (fermented)
-Chopped onions & grated carrots
-Tadka: mustard seeds, green chillies, curry leaves
-Manduva’s Tiffin Sprinkle Podi (or try their Peanut, Coconut Chilli, or Sesame Podi)
Steps:
-Mix veggies and tadka into the batter.
-Add 1–2 spoons of your favorite Manduva Tiffin Podi.
-Pour into a heated paniyaram pan.
-Flip once golden. Done!
